14 March 2024
Plans have been unveiled to expand Spain鈥檚 Adolfo Su谩rez-Madrid Barajas Airport 鈥 the capital鈥檚 only international airport 鈥 with the aim of enhancing its role as Europe鈥檚 primary gateway to Latin America.
Operations at the expanded airport 鈥 Spain鈥檚 busiest 鈥 are also expected to bolster the country鈥檚 connection to Asia.
Spain鈥檚 Prime Minister, Pedro S谩nchez, announced an investment initiative for the airport, potentially totalling 鈧2.4 billion (US$2.6 billion), saying, 鈥淭his will be the airport with the greatest growth potential in Europe.鈥
The sum would represent the largest infusion of funds into Spanish airport infrastructure in the past decade.
S谩nchez said the expansion initiative is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities while further bolstering Madrid鈥檚 gross domestic product (GDP).
The airport鈥檚 operator, AENA, says no new terminals are planned; instead the project will focus on refurbishing and expanding the existing facilities.
Scheduled to commence in 2031, the project aims to expand capacity to 90 million passengers.
