SICK launches new construction machinery sensor for metal detection

Sensor manufacturer SICK has launched a new inductive proximity sensor for metal detection that can be used in harsh environments on a range of construction equipment.

The company said the sensors could potentially be used on excavators, bulldozers, trenchers, cranes and loaders and would operate in harsh environments where other sensors may fail to perform.

They have a sensing range of up to 20mm and can operate in temperatures ranging from -40C to +85C.

Suitable for end position and home position detection, as well as simple speed detection tasks, SICK also claimed that the device is 鈥渋mpervious鈥 to shocks, vibration, oil, cooling lubricants, and weather effects such as rain, snow, mud and frost.

SICK UK market product manager - presence detection, David Hannaby, says, 鈥淚MG combines robustness and stable detection in a great value product. We know that mobile machinery manufacturers are looking for greater automation and precision, as customers increasingly demand more from their equipment. For instance, IMG sensors can be used in concrete pumps to ensure legs are down and secure before operation. The tough IMG sensor family is ideal for enhancing the performance, accuracy and safety of construction machinery.

鈥淚MG is already available in countless variations, but at SICK we want our customers to achieve the optimal performance from our products. That鈥檚 why, rather than designing to fit our sensors, our experts can work with your engineering and design teams to provide you with samples and help you select and modify the best-possible sensors for your needs.鈥
