Plans move forward for LNG terminal in Montenegro
11 October 2023
The EU is set to finance a major LNG terminal in Montenegro鈥檚 Adriatic port of Bar, according to a statement from its enlargement commissioner.
At a meeting in Belgrade earlier in the year, Oliv茅r V谩rhelyi said the European Union was 鈥渞eady to move very, very fast鈥 to aid the delivery of a terminal in the Balkans, but that a final location had not been agreed.
At a recent meeting in the Albanian capital Tirana, he said it was working with Montenegro, with a view to establishing the terminal in Bar.
According to a report in Balkan Green Energy News, a memorandum has been signed, which references the LNG terminal, but also the construction of a gas-fired power plant, which would be fuelled by the terminal.
In a statement, the Montengran Prime Minister Dritan Abazovi膰 said the terminal project would be of historical significance, making Montenegro a hub for other countries in the region, and increasing energy security, in the wake of Russia鈥檚 invasion of Ukraine.
