After years of planning and securing funding, major construction on the AU$5 billion (US$3.4 billion) redevelopment plan for the Perth Airport in Western Australia started earlier this month.

Jason Waters, Perth Airport CEO, ran through a list of improvements slated for the scheme.

鈥淭he project list includes two multi-storey car parks, a new terminal, an expanded international terminal, [and] our first-ever airport hotel and a new runway,鈥 said Waters, noting travellers should expect some inconveniences throughout the nearly decade-long project. 鈥淥ne of the first major projects to get started is our first multi-storey car park.鈥

The first of two car parks 鈥 a six-level structure 鈥 is currently under construction by Australia-based Georgiou Group.

Australian construction partners West Coast Civil and Perkins Builders are teaming up to deliver a new aviation support precinct, a terminal apron expansion and new hangar for Virgin Australia.

An international gate upgrade, a 鈥淐ommon User Self Service鈥 kiosk-installation project, and a $1.3-billion rail link to regional municipal centres have already been completed.

The overall multi-billion-dollar project is part of a commercial agreement between Australian airline Qantas and Perth Airport; once redevelopment of聽 the new terminal (Terminal 1) is complete, which is expected in 2031, Qantas and its subsidiary Jetstar will move into the new terminal. The new runway could be completed by 2028, said Perth Airport.

Perth Airport project seeking EOI

Perth Airport is still seeking EOIs (Expression of Interest) for the role of lead consultant on the new terminal project for Qantas. Selection will run through a two-phase process beginning with the EOI stage and followed by an RFT (Request for Tender) to up to five shortlisted candidates.

鈥淧erth Airport has commenced planning for a new terminal consisting of a new domestic terminal, an expansion of the current Terminal 1 International Terminal and associated contact aprons (the new terminal) and supporting remote airfield infrastructure,鈥 confirmed Perth Airport. 鈥淭he new terminal will function as a hub for Qantas operations and will also support the growth of other international services in Airport Central.鈥
