ERA warns of challenges for non-digitalised businesses

13 October 2021

The ERA has warned that the 鈥渞apid rise in online business models鈥 will create 鈥渟ignificant 鈥巆hallenges for those businesses that have not embraced new digital ways of 鈥巘rading,鈥 as its launches a new project to examine digitalisation in the rental sector.鈥

The association said the commercial landscape was being 鈥渢ransformed by the impact of digitisation and the 鈥巚irtual delivery of products and services.鈥

鈥淭his transformation has accelerated 鈥巇uring the Covid-19 pandemic, with physical facilities such as shops, showrooms and 鈥巖ental locations being either closed or severely limited in their ability 鈥巘o engage with customers in a traditional business model.鈥

The ERA鈥檚 caution to industry follows the official launch of the new project at the ERA Convention last month. The project鈥檚 aim is 鈥渢o raise awareness among rental companies 鈥巌n Europe about the challenges of digital transformation and provide guidance on best 鈥巔ractice.鈥濃

鈥淒igitisation is not just about transforming a business鈥檚 route to market. It is as much 鈥巃bout the collection, analysis and use of data, and using artificial intelligence to analyse 鈥巇ata, to develop tailored offerings and micro-target existing and potential 鈥巆ustomers.鈥 said ERA.鈥

鈥淭he European rental industry is as much affected by this transformation as any other 鈥巌ndustry. Therefore, digital transformation is a process that most companies 鈥巃re currently undergoing or will be facing in the near future.

鈥淎t the same time, there 鈥巃re good examples of companies that have started on the digital journey and which 鈥巆ould inspire others in the rental industry.鈥庘

The ERA鈥檚 digitalisation project will be steered by ERA鈥檚 Future Group, undertaken by sustainability strategy and innovation consultancy epi Consulting, and encompass engagement from all ERA committees.聽
